His astonishing own goal after only seven minutes completely wiped out the advantage of United's brilliant start.
A superb move which saw Mark Hughes get Lee Sharpe away for Brian McClair to score in the first minute was beyond even Alex Ferguson's wildest dreams.But it all came to nothing with such a rapid equaliser which also had the effect of demoralising the Reds.
Fergie's Verdict
We had such a wonderful start and then the killer moment of conceding a goal so early. We had warned about the dangers of giving Montpellier an away goal, and after it happened we were uncomfortable and nervous all night.
But there will be no criticism of Lee Martin for the own-goal because it was he who got us into the competition in the first place with his goal at Wembley. The boy won the cup for us.
But the reasons for a disappointing draw go deeper. The French team looked fresher and were sharper to everything.
I have no complaints about the score. We didn't deserve anything more.
We lacked composure and passing ability. We spoke about it at half time, but it's different achieving it out on the pitch.
